Fight Review: Craig Coakley Stops Mekhea After Bloody Battle

Craig Coakley secured a hard-fought TKO victory over Cambodia’s Mekhea in a contest that shifted dramatically after a brutal first round.

Both fighters opened aggressively, trading low kicks early as they looked to establish dominance. Coakley pushed the pace, working behind his leg kicks, while Mekhea's boxing immediately stood out — sharp hands and confident forward movement.

An early elbow from Coakley was answered emphatically. Mekhea began finding his rhythm with his hands, landing a strong right that visibly wobbled Coakley before following up with clean elbows in close. The turning point of the round came when Mekhea landed a beautiful left elbow that opened a deep cut on Coakley’s face, leaving him bleeding heavily.

Despite the damage, Coakley continued pressing forward, trying to land leg kicks and stay mobile as the round closed. Mekhea remained aggressive, stalking with his boxing. Coakley survived to the bell, but the cut required immediate attention from the doctor before round two.

The fight was allowed to continue.

In the second round, Mekhea resumed his pursuit, looking to chase Coakley down with punches. However, Coakley adjusted well. He began managing distance more effectively, alternating between tying up inside and using his longer frame to strike from range.

After landing a couple of strong left knees, Coakley’s confidence visibly grew. His boxing sharpened, highlighted by a clean 1–2 combination that began shifting momentum. While some elbow attempts narrowly missed, Coakley found increasing success with his hands.

The decisive moment came with a powerful left hook to the body. The shot landed clean and forced the stoppage, securing Coakley a TKO victory, only seconds before the end of round 2.

What began as a dangerous and bloody first round ultimately turned into a composed comeback performance. Despite suffering a heavy cut from a well-timed elbow, Coakley adjusted, regained control, and finished the fight with clinical body work.

A gritty performance and a statement win.
