The Devenish Complex, Belfast | May 2nd
Deliverance Muay Thai returned to Belfast on May 2nd with yet another fantastic night of action at the Devenish Complex, showcasing the very best of local and national talent across both amateur and professional ranks.
The event opened with a series of high-quality amateur bouts that set the tone for the evening. Matchmaking was excellent throughout, with closely contested fights and a clear display of strong grassroots Muay Thai. Technical ability, heart, and determination were on full display, providing the perfect build-up to an exciting professional main card.
Professional Bouts
The first fight of the main card saw Eoin McDonnell take on Jake Gilpins in a dramatic contest. Gilpins started fast, hurting McDonnell badly in the opening round. However, McDonnell showed incredible resilience, turning the tide in the later rounds through relentless pressure, effective knees, and sheer determination to secure a unanimous decision victory.
Next up, Gareth Chaston faced Cameron Wylie in what marked Chaston’s first professional C-class outing. Both fighters came forward from the opening bell, neither willing to take a backward step. Chaston’s sharp boxing, forward pressure, and superior conditioning ultimately proved decisive, earning him a well-deserved unanimous decision win.
In the third bout, Gary Miller delivered one of the standout finishes of the night, defeating Cody Butler via knockout. In an action-packed fight, both men showed high-level skill and aggression. Miller dropped Butler with a powerful left hand before scoring a second knockdown, forcing a referee stoppage in round two.
Daire McGlade vs Lorcan McDonagh followed in another exciting clash. McDonagh impressed early with strong clinch work and sharp elbows, but McGlade shifted momentum in the second round. After landing a damaging knee that resulted in a count, McGlade followed up with further pressure to secure a TKO victory in round two.
The bout between Dean Graham and Kevin McGuinness was a technical showcase. Graham delivered one of the most composed performances of the night, utilising a beautiful long guard, precise timing, and excellent control to disrupt his opponent throughout. In this rematch, Graham’s skill and composure earned him stoppage win in round 3
The co-main event featured James Kelly against Oisín Byrne, and it proved to be a short but explosive encounter. Kelly started aggressively, setting the tone early. A well-timed head kick led the exchange that led to the first count, followed by sustained pressure, sharp elbows, and inside boxing. Byrne was unable to recover from the successive counts, and the referee stepped in to stop the contest in round one.
Main Event
In the main event, Liam McDonnell took on Mohamad Kalf in a high-level, competitive contest.
Kalf started strongly, showcasing sharp boxing in the early rounds and putting McDonnell under pressure. However, McDonnell remained composed, weathering the storm and gradually finding his rhythm. From the second round onwards, he began to establish control with well-timed knees, effective calf kicks, and strong clinch work.
As the fight progressed into the later rounds, McDonnell’s pressure and conditioning became increasingly evident. With Kalf slowing, McDonnell capitalised by landing cleaner, more effective shots and controlling the pace of the fight.
After five hard-fought rounds, Liam McDonnell secured a unanimous decision victory, capping off an excellent night of Muay Thai action.
